Life Lessons from people in the Bible - THE LEGACY OF LOIS AND EUNICE 2 Timothy 1:5-6 ‘I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and I am persuaded now lives in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.’ In our house there was an old wooden clock. It was my grandfather who handed it down to my father who used it in our home. The clock lasted close to 30 or even more years until one day no matter how much we wound it up it didn’t work. The day of its demise had arrived. So no matter what the person who fixes clocks did it did not work. My friends that is how worldly possessions or inheritances are, they fade away or disappear with time. Memories are forgotten. Assets change hands. What was important to one generation is not important to the next. However there is one everlasting legacy and if you invest in that it will last through the generations. Proverbs 20:7 says ‘The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him.’ Psalm 112:1-2 ‘Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in His commands. His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.’ Yes my friends if you as a father or mother decide to keep the faith and live a righteous life and train up your children from small days to live according to the word of God and even teach them to teach their children to live according to the Word of God, the generations that follow will be blessed. Deuteronomy 4:9 says ‘Only be careful and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to you children and to their children after them. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says ‘Hear O Israel; The Lord our God the Lord is one, Love the Lord you God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.’ Yes if you will invest time and effort in building up a godly home full of prayers and praise and teaching of the Word of the Lord, the Lord will honour it and He will bless your generation. He will ensure that your generation will be one that is saved and used by God. Look at the family of Timothy in the passage of scripture above, the faith of his grandmother resulted in Timothy being a mighty man of God. Similarly if you build up your home in the faith, the Lord will raise up for Himself mighty men and women of God from your generation to serve Him. The faithfulness of our grandparents who kept the faith has resulted in my father, my mother and today myself being used by the Lord. God honours genuine faith and remembers it throughout the generation. So this is the best legacy you could leave your generation. Why? Because it is a legacy that lasts, a heritage that holds on, a memory that’s mighty. So today have your family prayers. Teach your children the word of God from the time they are born. Read Bible stories. Read from the Word of God to them from the time they are able to read and write. Teach them from the Bible as you teach them to read and write. My friends when your children grow up though satan will come to deceive, the Lord will keep His promise and raise a standard against the enemy. Not only for your children, but also for the generations to follow salvation will remain. The seed you place in the hearts of your family will bear a harvest that lasts generations. Isaiah 55:10-11 ‘As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my Word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.’ This is the promise for all you parents who take the pledge to build up a home on the foundation called JESUS. God bless you. (Romesh Daniels).
