Light Duty I opens da big oak doors dat leads into Mr. Longwood cemetery building. It were jus as strange da second time around, as it were da first. Da thing dat I don’t like, jus like da last time, were da smell. I kid you not, it smell like moldy root. I puts my hand over my nose an walks da twenty feet, or so, to Mr. Longwood office. Thinkin back, I guess I shoulda knock, first. I push my way into Mr. Longwood office an say, “Mr. Jack say I should see you ‘bout some light duty”. I were met with a sight, da likes, I never seen before. Dere were Mr. McBride an Mr.Longwood, dress in tattered black gowns, jus like my mama da Braucher witch, wear. I thinks to myself, “Dis ain’t so good, I shoulda knock, first.” I starts to turn around an go outs da same way I comes in, but Mr. McBride speaks up. In a real loud voice, Mr. McBride say, “Blue Eyes, stand your ground.” Dere were no where’s I could go, so I jus “stands my ground.” “Why aren’t you doing yard work”, Mr. McBride say. ‘It be raining, an I were told to do light duty up front, in da office”, I says, kinda smart like. I were tired of gettin pushed around by da Abovers, seemed like I were back in Broughton Hollow again. Mr. McBride looks at Mr. Longwood an kinda shrugs his shoulders. It were jus about dat same time Jack come bustin through da doors. “I should’ve just sent him to the shack, this is my fault”, Jack nervously said. “My fault”, what Jack be talkin about, “My fault”? If it were anyone fault it be mine. Jack grab me by da arm an usher me out da big oak doors. No-one say nothin, an dat were a good thing, a real good thing.
