Lights. Camera. Where’s the Action?: Check Yourself Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, (1 John 2:4 ESV) By ourselves we can do nothing that pleases God (Isaiah 64:6) because every action is tainted by sin. Sin isn’t simply found in a someone’s actions, but within that person. Jesus taught that the problem of sin isn’t due to all of the evil “out there”, but all of the evil “in here” (Matthew 15:11). Without a saving knowledge of Jesus, we cannot hope to truly “keep his commandments”. But a deceitful reality exists: we can have knowledge about God without actually knowing him! Take, for instance, someone’s favorite NFL player; a person can know in great detail the player’s statistics without really knowing the player. Even demons have knowledge of God (James 2:19), but it isn’t saving knowledge. Examine your life and your claim that “you know him”. Does your life match your words? Is the truth really in you? To be abundantly clear, keeping the commands of Jesus is not what brings us to salvation; that is vital to understand. Living in keeping with Jesus’ teaching is indicative of salvation because it is only possible through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit that occurs at salvation. Right living stems from right standing before God, something only possible through confessing Jesus as Savior, King and Lord, and surrendering your heart and will in belief to him (Romans 10:9-10). This isn’t a formula for salvation, but a meeting place. If your heart is stirred, respond to the Holy Spirit’s leading and repent. Surrender your life to God’s glory and your ultimate joy.
