Listening to another influential intellectual from the left--George Lakoff, who came up with you didnt build that. He said (1) that the right won over all the working class white voters by telling them that liberals were elitists, which he implied was not true. He also (2) thinks Obama is a political genius. At the intersection of these two things is Obamas famous quote about the white working class. The best way to interpret his two points, in light of the quote, is that the right didnt steal working class white voters by convincing them that libs were elitist. Libs are elitists, so those voters strayed. ...the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothings replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And its not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who arent like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
