Litany of the Zimbabwe Voter I am battered and dehumanised by life’s trials Imposed by my own on this our land of plenty; I am a moving corpse of what was me Wherewith the horizon of my thoughts Going no further than today’s meal Thereby unwittingly proping my persecutor. Come elections I dream of change To use my vote towards a better world: The good but poor guys comes along I hear and love his pathway to betterment But he’s too poor or too honest to bribe me With food and drink I ask - just for today. The rich thief comes, riding on spoils off me But no word for tomorrow, what tomorrow Only sweet nothings, slogans and bravado And to great cheers he pops the magic wand: Food and drinks galore - but just for today Withal, my vote, and the cycle continues. I later join the chorus bemoaning the status quo But to them or myself would I ever admit As to who the culprit to this coming really was: That I’d mortgaged the eternity of my tomorrows To the devil’s lure of a meal – just for the day! © Benjamin Takavarasha 2013 taken from In Touch - Jesuit Communications Zimbabwe No 18
