Liverpool news: forward Gerrard, Sturridge hitting 30 goals Steven Gerrard has said he has more of a licence to get forward and into goalscoring positions under manager Brendan Rodgers. Gerrard has been operating in a deeper role in the middle of the park for Liverpool, but hopes he can contribute more goals like the one he scored for England against Poland last week. The Liverpool captain told the Liverpool Echo and Liverpool Post: ‘I can get forward slightly more in this formation knowing that I have got three defenders behind me. In general, whether the system changed or not, I have spoken to Brendan and he wants me to pick and choose my runs. ‘Everybody understands that I’m not 21 anymore where I can burst into the box at every opportunity. With experience, I hope I can pick the right times for those bursts.’ Brendan Rodgers is determined for his reign to be a positively historic one after visiting Liverpool’s new museum, and says all the history attached to it provides a big inspiration for him. He said: ‘The rich history of this club was a big reason why I came here. The Liverpool story is immense. The legend will always live here because it’s a remarkable history with all the great players and managers. ‘I will always respect that. We are a modern club trying to progress but a big part of this club is its history – that will never be allowed to be forgotten.’ Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes that current striker Daniel Sturridge can hit the 30 goal mark this season. Sturridge has scored seven goals in eight league games so far this season, and has managed to score 20 goals for the club in just 26 games. Rush said: ‘He always had potential. We always knew that he was a good player, otherwise you don’t play for Man City and Chelsea. Every time he plays he looks like he is going to score. And he excites people when he’s on the pitch. ‘Daniel has got to be looking for between 20 and 30 goals this season. And I think him playing regularly for England is also going to help him for Liverpool.’
