Liverpool’s mouth-watering clash with AC Milan in Charlotte on - TopicsExpress

Liverpool’s mouth-watering clash with AC Milan in Charlotte on August 2nd promises to bring back plenty of fond memories for the Liverpool fans attending the game in North Carolina. Nine years ago, AC Milan provided the opposition at the Ataturk Stadium as Steven Gerrard inspired his team to one of the most remarkable sporting comebacks of all time to win the European Cup on penalties. It’s a game that has since been dubbed ‘the miracle of Istanbul’ by many supporters but for Jordon Ibe, one of Gerrard’s youngest teammates, the biggest miracle of the night was the fact that he actually got to stay up to watch the whole game on a school night. Jordon, you were nine years old when Liverpool beat AC Milan in the Champions League final in 2005. Did you watch the game? Yes, I did. My mum tried to send me to bed when it got to extra-time, but I managed to watch all of the game. It was really late for me but it was too exciting to stop watching. What did you think of the second-half comeback? It was terrific. I didn’t think that Liverpool had any chance of coming back. I thought it was going to be 5-nil, 6-nil or 7-nil but then Steven Gerrard scored the first goal with that header and everything changed from there. Could you have ever imagined when you were watching that match that one day you would end up playing for Liverpool? No. I never thought about it at any time. It’s a life-changer because Liverpool is such a great club and it’s just great being here. I remind myself every day that I just need to grab my opportunity. How much are you looking forward to playing against AC Milan in Charlotte? Are they a team that you admire? AC Milan have had some of the greatest players in the world in the past and they still have lots of world class players like Kaka, amongst others so I’m really looking forward to playing against them. You went on the last North American tour in 2012. How was that experience for you? I just loved it. When we went to Canada, we played against Toronto and that was great. I think there were more than 50,000 fans there and it was just terrific. I was 16 years old then and I had never really played in front of more than a thousand people. So to play in front of that many people was just great and it says a lot about the fan base of Liverpool in North America. I loved it. Liverpool FC take on AC Milan in Charlotte, North Carolina in the International Champions Cup on August 2.
