Lorraine Higgins isnt wrong about Ireland being a lawless utopia. Shes wrong about when that began. No tax for major multinational corporations, scant regulation for international finance, zero accountability for white-collar criminals like the Anglo bankers who cost the state billions, practical impunity for political corruption. Pretty lawless, pretty utopian for the business class. Meanwhile, after six years of austerity, the government is trying to introduce charges for water to a country where a million people say they have less than €50 spare at the end of the month, paving the way for families in poverty to have to choose between a shower and a cup of tea, facilitated by a corrupt billionaire with ties to the government who hopes to privatise it one day, all to pay off private banking debts we have no responsibility for. And government Senators are coming on the radio to tell us that before we object to this, before we make democratic decisions in our society, we should think about how our actions will look to our corporate overlords. Ireland in 2014: lawless utopia for some, legalised dystopia for the rest of us.
