قال النبي (ص): إن النساء شقائق - TopicsExpress

قال النبي (ص): إن النساء شقائق الرجال Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) said that surely women are equal twin halves of men. Modern day feminists may take exception to this saying because it would appear that the worth of women is being measured to their relationship with men. In historical context, this statement was revolutionary 14 centuries ago. Prior to Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), baby girls suffered infantcide. Women had no real property rights nor rights of inheritance. Women could not chose nor decline who they could marry. This statement reflects a radical paradigm shift in which women were encouraged to become educated, to have their economic rights protected and to participate in battles next to men. In Europe centuries later, women did not have such rights. Christian theologians were still debating if women even had souls. Women need male allies in addressing male chauvinism, especially from religious men. Men have to be willing to divest from systems of misogyny which devalue the lives of women. Muslim men in particular need to deconstruct cultural expression of Islam which keep our sisters in virtual dungeon type conditions in many masaajid & tolerate domestic violence by telling sisters to go home and be patient. Its a shame that we need an issue like Ray Rice, an overpaid brute, for us to re-start a discussion about domestic violence when women are getting beaten every minute in America.
