Lost in translation!! A person has to be so careful how you write a post on FB ,a countryman of mine did not understand the sentence I wrote on a discussion for ex military vets. The person and I were exchanging harsh words,when one of his friends explained to him that I did not write what he interpreted. I was called a chicken shit!! Because according to him I ran away from South Africa and not defending my country, I served 2 years national service in a tough unit in the South African defence force and did 1 year operational duty on the Angolan border ,little did this individual know I later I was called up during the one of the biggest military operations against Castros Cubans and The MPLA in the battle of Cuito Cuinavale where 8 members of my former unit were killed by a Russian mig. I gave everything to South Africa! I dont owe South Africa nothing! I actually got exempted from military duty because my father died 2 days before my 18 the birthday ...when my mom and my brothers who were little at the time decided to go to Greece ,my mothers coutry of origin, the very next day I walked into a recruiting office and I said I AM READY TO SERVE MY COUNTRY..the recruiting officer looked at me like I was crazy!!! He says but,you have been exempted!! I said no put me on for the next intake.A lot of friends who came from wealthy families ran away overseas to study to avoid conscription. South Africa you put yourself for sale!! I did what I had too,my force number 81244576 BG corporal .
