Love Unites-Doctrine Divides? 1 Corinthians 13:1-6 Many religious leaders today are furiously attempting to forge ecumenical unity among all churches and denominations. Realizing that such unity can only come to pass by minimizing doctrinal truth and breaking down walls of theological difference, they often call out, Love unites-doctrine divides! Evangelistic campaigns, ecumenical conferences, political rallies, and inclusivist churches desiring to experience dynamic growth consistently stress the need to focus on a common goal and to set aside any theological and doctrinal differences. To these individuals, love is more important than sound doctrine. But is the expression of love (as they perceive it) truly greater than the need for sound doctrine in ministry? No, Jesus clearly told His disciples, If ye love Me, keep My commandments (Jn.14:15, 21).. Jesus commandments are one and the same with His very words, given by the miracle of inspiration to the writers of the Scriptures (see Acts 1:1-2; 1 Cor.14:37; 1 Thess.4:1-2; Rev.1:1-3; 22:18-19). If we love God, then we will exalt Gods Word! Gods love (agape) rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth (1 Cor.15:6). True love never ignores nor minimizes error (2 Tim.2:15-19 powerful illustrates the iniquity of false teaching). Genuine love, which transcends even the virtues of faith and hope (1 Cor.13:13), rejoices only in what God has declared to be true, and that truth is found only in the Written Word, the Bible. This is an incredibly important matter. To attempt to separate true, biblical love from doctrinal truth is to take a treacherous path, for doing so distorts the very expression of Gods love for us.
