MATCH PREVIEW SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4 – 20h15 Kaizer Chiefs vs Maritzburg United Telkom Knockout, Last 16 FNB Stadium Chiefs have been in imperious form this season, recording 11 successive wins across all competitions, including a 1-0 win over their Pietermaritzburg opponents on the weekend. Maritzburg’s loss at the hands of the Soweto giants was a third successive match in which they have failed to claim a victory. Chiefs reached the semifinals of last year’s Telkom Knockout before they were beaten 1-0 by eventual champions Platinum Stars. The Soweto giants have played 20 Telkom Knockout matches since the tournament’s inception in 2006, recording 10 wins, five draws and five defeats. They have won all five of the penalty shootouts they have been involved in. The Amakhosi have lifted the trophy three times in the Telkom Knockout era, winning the competition in 2007/08, 2009/10 and 2010/11. In League Cup history, Chiefs are comfortably the most successful side, boasting 13 titles (1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009/10 & 2010/11) and further three runners-up finishes (1985, 1992 & 2002). Maritzburg were also a victim of eventual champions Platinum Stars in last season’s Telkom Knockout, as they were beaten 2-0 in a last 16 clash in Rustenburg. The KwaZulu-Natal team has played 10 Telkom Knockout matches since the tournament’s inception in 2006, recording two wins, one draw and seven defeats. They won the one penalty shootout they have been involved in. The Team of Choice’s best showing in the Telkom Knockout era is reaching the semifinals in the 2010/11 season. In head-to-head stats, Chiefs and Maritzburg have met in just one previous official cup clash. That encounter was a Coca-Cola Cup (forerunner to the Telkom Knockout) match in 2005 that saw the Amakhosi claim a 2-1 win. Overall, the teams have met in 18 matches across all competitions since 2005/06. Chiefs have claimed eight victories compared to four for the Team of Choice, while six matches have been drawn. The Amakhosi have won six of their 10 home matches against the KwaZulu-Natal side, suffering two defeats in the process. Chiefs are unbeaten in their last five meetings with United, including a 1-0 win in a league match this past weekend.
