MCP’S MSUNGAMA WINS ELECTION CASE Lilongwe City South East - TopicsExpress

MCP’S MSUNGAMA WINS ELECTION CASE Lilongwe City South East parliamentary candidate for opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the May 20 tripartite elections, Ulemu Msungama, has won a case in which he was challenging the parliamentary results for his constituency. Msungama sought for court’s redress following the decision by Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) to declare Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Bentry Namasasu winner of the parliamentary seat. Making its determination today, the High Court in Lilongwe has asked the electoral body, MEC, to conduct a rerun in the constituency soon to accord Lilongwe City South East constituents opportunity to have a representative of their choice in parliament. The High Court in Lilongwe had earlier ruled for a recount of the votes for the constituency, a ruling which was thwarted by the mysterious fire which gutted down MEC’s warehouse in Lilongwe where ballot papers for the disputed results were being kept. The development saw the court to ask lawyer representing Msungama in the case, Emmanuel Chapo, to file fresh arguments following the MEC’s warehouse fire.
