MESSAGE FROM THE JERSEY CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION The Jersey City Public Schools Celebrate a “Week of Respect” Jersey City, NJ - As part of the effort to reduce harassment, intimidation, and bullying, New Jersey has named the week of October 7-11 as “The Week of Respect.” Jersey City’s Public Schools have many activities planned to celebrate this week and empower students to make their schools more inclusive and safer environments for all. All schools will have activities throughout the week. A “Peace Circle” will be formed with all the staff and students of Dr. Paul Rafalides School, PS 33; students at Charles E. Trefurt School , PS 8 and Joseph H. Brensinger School, PS 17 will be “getting caught being kind”; and students will enjoy a “Friendship” salad at Curries Woods Early Childhood Center. Other schools are planning activities such as assemblies, pep rallies, decorating classroom doors, and participating in essay, and poster contests. The culminating event of the week will be a ”Week of Respect” Ceremony held at City Hall on Friday, October 11, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. There will be an assembly held with representative students from four (4) schools: PS#3, MS#4, PS#5, and PS#16. Deputy Mayor Vivian Brady-Phillips will read the City proclamation; Mr. Franklin Walker, Associate Superintendent of Student Life & Services, as well as, Paula Christen, Anti-Bullying Coordinator for the District, will address the students. The Anti-Bullying flag will then be flown from City Hall at the end of the program. “The District takes bullying very seriously and investigates all incidents that come to each school’s attention. Every school has an Anti-Bullying Specialist who works with the School Safety Team in helping to ensure that the school is a safe haven for students, as well as, working to improve school climate,” Mrs. Christen said.
