MH 370 - Ex-teacher praying hard for safety of her only son It has been four days. Wan Tom Wan Chik, 74, has not been able to eat well. Every meal served to her at the Everly Hotel in Putrajaya since Saturday reminds her of her only son Mohd Sofuan Ibrahim. Sofuan, 33, was one of the 227 passengers in the missing MH370 flight, which disappeared during its journey from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing at 1.30am on Saturday. He is very close to me as he is the youngest of five siblings and the only son, said Wan Tom at the hotel lobby today. Wan Tom’s friends, have come here to do their best to take her mind off her son. With no news of his whereabouts, Wan Tom has refused to leave the hotel even for one minute. I am not happy. It is better to stay here to keep myself updated with what is happening, she said. Talking about her only son, Wan Tom said Sofuans favourite dish was sambal tumis, spicy anchovies cooked dry in chilli paste. I made some for him. It is still there in the fridge of his house. It’s his favourite meal, she said. Sofuan, an officer with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti), was supposed to report for work at the ministrys Beijing office. He has been working with Miti since 2011 and was sent to Beijing to be the second secretary for economic affairs. We spent a few days with him before his flight on Saturday. We went home to Kedah on the same day, few hours prior to his departure. We never felt anything was amiss because he always went abroad for work, said Wan Tom. He will be coming home, said Sofuans father, Ibrahim Abdul Razak. MH370 carrying 227 passengers from 14 countries and 12 crews, went off radar after flown into Vietnamese airspace. – March 11, 2014.
