MH370: Underwater sound detected in central Indian Ocean PETALING JAYA(June 5): Australians researchers have announced that deep sea microphones picked up an intense sound that may just hold vital clues to the final moments of missing MAS flight MH370. However, the reseachers were quick to point out that a likelihood of a connection could be as low at 10 per cent and a natural event like an earthquake might have also been the source. According to foreign reports, scientists from Curtin University in Western Australia described the sound as a dull oomph detected in the central Indian Ocean, nearly 5,000km away from the present search zone in the southern Indian Ocean. Some of the underwater sensors were set up by the United Nations to monitor for nuclear tests, while others were put in place for Australian research purposes. According to Alec Duncan, from the universitys Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST) the sensors picked up the signal on March 8 around the time the plane was thought to have crashed. The signal was then matched with another underwater listening station, run by the United Nations Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), off Cape Leeuwin, the most south-westerly mainland point of Australia.
