MORNING PRAYER Saturday, 1 November 2014 Solemnity of All Saints Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Your faithful servants bless you. They make known the glory of your kingdom. One or more of the following is said or sung: this or another prayer of thanksgiving Blessed are you, Sovereign God, ruler and judge of all, to you be praise and glory for ever. In the darkness of this age that is passing away may the light of your presence which the saints enjoy surround our steps as we journey on. May we reflect your glory this day and so be made ready to see your face in the heavenly city where night shall be no more. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever. a suitable hymn, or A Song of Trust in God As the deer longs for the water brooks, • so longs my soul for you, O God. My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God; • when shall I come before the presence of God? My tears have been my bread day and night, • while all day long they say to me, ‘Where is now your God?’ Now when I think on these things, I pour out my soul: • how I went with the multitude and led the procession to the house of God, With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, • among those who kept holy day. Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul, • and why are you so disquieted within me? O put your trust in God; • for I will yet give him thanks, who is the help of my countenance, and my God. Psalm 42.1-7 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. This opening prayer may be said The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. The Word of God Psalmody The appointed psalmody is said. Psalm 15 Through the greatness of your mercy, I will come into your house. Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? • Who may rest upon your holy hill? Whoever leads an uncorrupt life • and does the thing that is right; Who speaks the truth from the heart • and bears no deceit on the tongue; Who does no evil to a friend • and pours no scorn on a neighbour; In whose sight the wicked are not esteemed, • but who honours those who fear the Lord. Whoever has sworn to a neighbour • and never goes back on that word; Who does not lend money in hope of gain, • nor takes a bribe against the innocent; Whoever does these things • shall never fall. Through the greatness of your mercy, I will come into your house. Lord, lead us to our heavenly home by single steps of self-restraint and deeds of righteousness; through the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord. Psalm 84 Blessed are they who dwell in your house. How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! • My soul has a desire and longing to enter the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young: • at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are they who dwell in your house: • they will always be praising you. R Blessed are those whose strength is in you, • in whose heart are the highways to Zion, Who going through the barren valley find there a spring, • and the early rains will clothe it with blessing. They will go from strength to strength • and appear before God in Zion. R O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; • listen, O God of Jacob. Behold our defender, O God, • and look upon the face of your anointed. For one day in your courts • is better than a thousand. R I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God • than dwell in the tents of ungodliness. For the Lord God is both sun and shield; he will give grace and glory; • no good thing shall the Lord withhold from those who walk with integrity. O Lord God of hosts, • blessed are those who put their trust in you. Blessed are they who dwell in your house. Lord God, sustain us in this vale of tears with the vision of your grace and glory, that, strengthened by the bread of life, we may come to your eternal dwelling place; in the power of Jesus Christ our Lord. Psalm 149 Sound praises to the Lord, all the earth. Alleluia. O sing to the Lord a new song; • sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in their maker; • let the children of Zion be joyful in their king. Let them praise his name in the dance; • let them sing praise to him with timbrel and lyre. For the Lord has pleasure in his people • and adorns the poor with salvation. R Let the faithful be joyful in glory; • let them rejoice in their ranks, With the praises of God in their mouths • and a two-edged sword in their hands; To execute vengeance on the nations • and punishment on the peoples; To bind their kings in chains • and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute on them the judgement decreed: • such honour have all his faithful servants. Alleluia. Sound praises to the Lord, all the earth. Glorious and redeeming God, give us hearts to praise you all our days and wills to reject the world’s deceits, that we may bind the evils of our age and proclaim the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord. Each psalm or group of psalms may end with Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. If there are two Scripture readings, the first may be read here, or both may be read after the canticle. Isaiah 35 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.’ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveller, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. Canticle The following, or another suitable canticle, may be said or sung Refrain: God makes righteousness and praise blossom before all the nations. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, • my soul shall exult in my God; Who has clothed me with the garments of salvation, • and has covered me with the cloak of integrity, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, • and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth puts forth her blossom, • and as seeds in the garden spring up, So shall God make righteousness and praise • blossom before all the nations. For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, • and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, Until her deliverance shines out like the dawn, • and her salvation as a burning torch. The nations shall see your deliverance, • and all rulers shall see your glory; Then you shall be called by a new name • which the mouth of God will give. Luke 9.18-27 Once when Jesus was praying alone, with only the disciples near him, he asked them, ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’ They answered, ‘John the Baptist; but others, Elijah; and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered, ‘The Messiah of God.’ He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone, saying, ‘The Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.’ Then he said to them all, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it. What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words, of them the Son of Man will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. But truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.’ A suitable song or chant, or a responsory in this or another form, may follow I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord, my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. The heavens bear witness to your wonders; I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. The assembly of your saints proclaims your truth; my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord, my lips shall proclaim your faithfulness. from Psalm 89 Gospel Canticle The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or the Te Deum Laudamus (A Song of the Church) (page 636) may be said Refrain: The righteous will shine like the sun in the highest heavens. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, • who has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, • born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets God promised of old • to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, To show mercy to our ancestors, • and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: • to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, • holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, • for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation • by the forgiveness of all their sins. In the tender compassion of our God • the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, • and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.68-79 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Refrain: The righteous will shine like the sun in the highest heavens. Prayers Intercessions are offered ¶ for the day and its tasks ¶ for the world and its needs ¶ for the Church and her life The cycle on pages 364–365 and the prayer on page 377 may be used. These responses may be used Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer (or) Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. Silence may be kept. The Collect of the day is said Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer is said Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. (or) Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Conclusion May Christ, who has opened the kingdom of heaven, bring us to reign with him in glory. Amen.
