MUD 90% I realize that most of you have never even heard of this movie and won’t see it in the theater, but please make it a point to catch it on DVD when it comes out. It’s really great. The movie unfolds like a mystery, but it’s a love story at its core. Or rather, a story about what love means. The main character is a 14-year-old boy, Ellis, who has overblown ideals of romance and honor, and the story takes him through his confusion and disillusionment when those ideals are challenged. Initially you think the movie is about the titular ‘Mud’ (Matthew McConaughey), as Ellis and his buddy gradually learn his story and the intrigue behind it. But as the story unfolds, you realize it’s not about Mud at all, it’s about what he represents to Ellis. The writing is so true and the kid that plays Ellis does such an outstanding job, it’s like you are watching a real kid come-of age before your eyes. This film is not without its flaws - there are some contrived plot elements that don’t quite work and I was somewhat disappointed with the ending, which didn’t match the grit of the rest of the movie (20 bucks says it wasn’t the original ending and was rewritten to please audiences). But it’s the heart of a movie that makes it great, and this one has a heart of gold.
