Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists and Songs That Defined the 1980s by Lori Majewski...The Spandau Connection Mad World was inspired by an interview that Gary Kemp and Steven Norman had given to the Guardian a few years back about True. My co-author, Jonathan Bernstein, and I had read it separately, but we came away with the same idea: What if we did an entire book on the stories behind all of our favorite songs? And, as it turned out, our favorite songs are all from new wave: the post-punk period that began in 1977 and ended with Band Aid in 1985. However, after we conducted a number of interviews, we realized that the book was evolving into a lot more — an oral history of the culture of the times, the fashions, the competition between the groups, and, sometimes, as in Spandaus case, the strife within the bands themselves. Jonathan and I both went into the Spandau chapter as big fans of the band, but we came away with even more of a respect for the group. As the unofficial house band for the Blitz, they spearheaded the sound and the look that came to define the era. And they did something that almost no pop acts do today: They evolved. Each album had a radically different sound — and a brand-new look to go with it. Jonathan interviewed Gary by phone, and I talked to Tony via Skype, and we came away with two very different interviews, but both men are so proud of Spandaus legacy and are committed to helping to preserve it. When I interviewed the band at South by Southwest last month I was impressed with how well they are getting on and was absolutely blown away by the bands first performance in the U.S. since the eighties. It was my first time seeing them in concert as well — we here in the U.S. have been deprived! I found them to be a formidable live band with incredible energy and inimitable chemistry.
