Managed to copy the post so here we go: This year they are more people sleeping rough than ever. In 15 years living in Cambridge I have befriended a fair lot of homeless people. When my bicycle got stollen a few years ago, they spotted the thief and convinced him to give back the bike because i am a good woman they said. When my boat got vandalised last october, theyve asked arround for information and came back to me with crucial intelligence. Furthermore, since the incident they watch the boat for me when I am away working, and some of them offered to help me with the repairs or to collect free wood for my heating stove... So I seriously ow them one. In Cambridge ALL homeless get a shelter and a bed if the thermometer goes under 0°c for 3 days in a row...so if the thermometer goes 0° then 1°alternatively, well, alcoolics, addicts, pet owners and the ones affected by mental health dont get shelter. Alcoolics and addicts are systematically rejected because when they turn up at the door of the shelter theyre hight and/or drunk but if you have this sort of addiction you have no choice but to get high and/or drunk because otherwise widrawal symptoms puts you into excruciating pain. Yet their immune system is the most fragile among the people sleeping in the street. Most of pets owners managed to get over their addictions thanks to their dog (s), yet they are only 2 beds for a man and his dog at Jimmÿs shelter. These ones have to raise enough money begging to be able to afford a bed and breakfast for themselves and their companions. Finally, people with mental health issues, are terrified to be locked up again and been left into the hands of unethical psychiatric ward staff taking advantage of the fact that the family of these people are not at their side or visiting and making sure they are not used as lab rats and guinea pigs. This lot usually sleep rough under grave stones in Mill Road cemetery. During the 15 years Ive lived in this town, I know of 3 addicts who died not from OD but ...from Hypothermia. New years day 2013, shortly after midnight when I had just finnish my shift at the Crown Plazza it started to snow heavily. As i walked down Regent Street, i saw one of the homeless shivering hugging his dog in tears...This awfull picture never left me and I promised myself I WILL NOT have to see this again if I can help it. So heres the deal: WE DESPERATELY NEED BLANKETS, SLEEPING BAGS, POP UP TENTS, DOG CAGES AND GENERATORS. I cannot accept money as a donation, i am not set up as a charity but i am sure many of you notice someone was sleeping rough in their neighbourhood. So , may be instead of trying to bash someone on the head in order to grab one of these discounted flat screen tv, this year for Christmas you could save a life or 2 keeping these guys alive and warm. By the way did I mention some of them are veterans with post traumatic stress disorder? Theyve risked their life for their country lost their mental health and their families consequently. Yet the Torries and her magesty the Queen are leaving them to rot in the street. The army will only help if they give their name and matricule, well these guys dont want to give anymore to the army... Nobody becomes homeless by negligence or laziness. Most of people with addiction problems are just using and/or drinking because the kind of pain they need to sooth is too overwhelmingly acute to leave it with a sober self. I am happy to collect and dispatch any of the items listed before, i need cages and generators to be able to set up a crisis camp in the Fens. We need cages because we cant have that many dogs all running free in the same time and owners will NOT abandon dogs in shelters. But please if you spotted any homeless living near to you, please talk to them and ask if they have a shelter, get them a hot drink,a blanket or Whatever. Try to make the different between the ones which use heroine and alcool, and you shouldnt give them money only sometimes you can spot one in such a widrawal desperation that giving money is not that a bad idea after all, a tener is enough for a fix that wont lead to an OD. And for the others, especially dog owners, YES please give money, any little helps in their daily fundraising for a bed .If youre too broke to give money, give a cigarette and a bit of your time for a chit chat, you wont regret it, amazingly beautiful people sleep rough, everyone of them with a different story. Sometimes, simply talking to someone that does not look down on them can make their day. If you want to give food please donate to the food bank, thank you. PLEASE COPY AND POST!
