Many humans associate spring with the beginning of allergy season. Last month we mentioned allergies as a potential cause for itchy pets, and this week we’ll provide more details about pet allergies. An allergic reaction occurs when our immune system, which is responsible for protecting us against foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses, overreacts to a substance. Pets’ allergy symptoms are usually very different from humans’, with itchy skin being the most common sign. If your dog or cat displays frequent scratching or excessive licking (especially the face and paws), you may be dealing with allergies. Some pets will develop “hot spots,” or “acute moist dermatitis,” in response to an allergy. Other symptoms include ear infections and anal gland problems in dogs, and lip ulcers or other oral problems in cats.
