Many observers believe that Russias involvement in the Ukraine was due in part to the slowing economy, as Putin whipped up nationalism and anti-Western fervour to distract from the stagnating economy ... Russia, then, could risk getting caught in a vicious cycle, in which Putins reactions to the bad economy trigger reactions from the West that hurt the economy even more. With poor fundamentals, falling oil revenue and western sanctions, it is no surprise that the Russian economy is in bad shape. And it does not help that Putin is trying to cover up the weak economy by stirring up nationalism.
