Maple Bear India organized a five day intensive workshop for education leaders from all our schools across the northern region from 13th -17th May 2013 in Delhi and from 20th to 24th May in Bangalore for southern region. The vision behind this workshop was to empower education leaders from Maple Bear schools in understanding the research and literature based educational philosophy behind the Maple Bear approach to teaching and learning. The underlying purpose was to prepare and enable the participants for effective and powerful leadership while leading our programs in their respective cities. Resource person from Canada Ms. Beverley Bennett who has many years of experience as an educator. For most of her career, she worked in Canadian elementary schools as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, consultant, vice-principal and as a principal. She has also held educational positions in international schools in Egypt, England, Italy, Qatar, and Thailand. For the past four years, she has consulted with Maple Bear schools throughout Brazil, Mexico and Morocco providing a wide range of services. She has assisted in the opening of two new schools, offered initial training to new teachers, assisted staff to implement the program, and done Quality Assurance in schools in Mexico. She has led the way in designing and implementing professional development opportunities to familiarize teachers with the Maple Bear approach to comprehensive literacy. She has a Master of Education degree from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. The workshop helped the leaders to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Maple Bear curriculum and collectively develop strategies while discussing best practices from across the globe. The focus was on setting up effective functioning of Toddler, Nursery and Kindergarten classrooms in the Maple Bear Program. To help understand the Maple Bear approach in a comprehensive manner the workshop covered various topics over a period of five days. These included the importance of play based learning, handling learning centers to understand on how learning centers are the cornerstones to literacy. The days that followed laid emphasis on the Journey to Learning – no worksheets required and effective classroom management techniques from across the globe. The participants gained an in depth understanding on the importance of literacy and numeracy rich learning environments for the child and fostering these skills based on the best research practices for children throughout the world. The importance of intentional teaching, managing teachers and effective classroom management systems like the three minute walk through were discussed. Each topic was approached using power point presentations, videos, hands on activities, discussions, examining print materials, and references to the Maple Bear programs throughout the world. The last day of workshop was devoted to understanding assessment and evaluation systems using techniques that were child friendly and respect the child as a learner while keeping in mind the idea of multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner. By the end of the workshop the leaders were well equipped to train and support new teachers, keenly observe the effective implementation of Maple Bear teaching strategies, and had appropriate knowledge to ensure that the Maple Bear program is being followed as per the quality parameters. Our Educational Leader, Ms.Rameshwari Kumar was an enthusiastic participant and has bought back interesting ideas which will enrich the school in many ways.
