Marshall Fegers drives his Wissota Late Model into victory lane on Ag Appreciation Night at Madison Speedway! By: Carly Tofte Madison, MN (August 24th) – The grandstands were packed at Madison Speedway on Saturday night when the Wissota Late Models rolled into town for their yearly special. A nice car count in all classes made for an action-packed night of racing under the hot sun on Ag Appreciation night. Special thanks to the sponsors of the night, including: Titan Machinery, LQP Co. Soybean Growers, Pioneer Seed, Amundson Peterson Inc., Lund Implement Co., and Swenson, Nelson, Stulz PLLC of Madison. In dominating fashion, Mike Jans took home another clean sweep in the Wissota Street Stocks. Jans wasted little time in working the topside of the track to move into the top three, in a battle with Chris Serr and Doug Groenhoff for the lead. Serr momentarily stole the lead, until Jans dove low and cleared his competitors for the top spot as a caution fell. Back under green, Jans took off with the lead as Rob Konold moved under Serr for second. Soon Grady Myers, Darrin Landmark, and Jordan Tollakson joined in a race for third. With Konold solid in second, Landmark moved to the highside to gather momentum to clear Myers and Tollakson before sliding to the bottom to sneak past Konold for second. Landmark aimed to reel in Jans, but too few of laps remained to make up Jans’ big lead. Jans claimed the victory, trailed by Landmark, Konold, Serr, and Myers in the top five. Mayhem took place early in the Wissota Midwest Modified feature when a car spun on the frontstretch just as the field came to complete lap one. The frontstretch quickly plugged with cars, unfortunately many of which were forced to pull pitside and end their night. Back under green, Scott Harrington held the lead as Jason Vejtruba and John Schuelke split Jason Anderson in a battle of second. Vejtruba quickly gained control of second, and then chased down Harrington to steal the lead. Ryan Schluesner and DJ Tesch battled door-to-door with Schuelke for third, until Schluesner used the momentum of the topside to grab third, and then second from Harrington. Chad Olsen also took to the highside to move into third, and then dove low to steal second as Schluesner slipped a bit too high in turn three. A late yellow made for a green, white, checkered finish, but Vejtruba would not be denied the win. Taking home the hardware, Vejtruba captured his third win of the season at Madison Speedway, trailed by Olsen, Schluesner, Tesch, and Shawn Fernkes. Alan Johnson held the lead early in the Wissota Super Stocks, while Gary Husmann ran second and Nick Schipke battled with Cole Searing for third. Husmann and Schipke quickly charged the bottom to catch Johnson and as they worked the lowside, Searing flew around the topside with momentum to shoot into the lead. Once up front, Searing drove away from the field to claim the victory. Schipke drove low to move into second and held the position by just a car-length over Husmann at the checkers. Jay Hedtke took home fourth and Johnson rounded out the top five. Wissota Modifieds pulled onto the track next for their wild feature, which was plagued with cautions and calamity. Jordan Foster occupied the top spot initially until the first yellow of the race flew. On the restart, Foster and Scott Ward battled hard back and forth for the lead while Mike Stearns and Kent Arment ran right on their tail as they jockeyed for third. Soon Ward prevailed on the lowside with the lead, bringing Stearns and Arment along with him. Farther back, local driver, Jeff Wildung, began to show his strength as he drove into the fifth position after starting eleventh on the grid. Another yellow at the halfway point reset the field and erased Ward’s big lead, putting Stearns and Arment right on his tail. Stearns put pressure on Ward at the restart and the two raced hard for several laps, sliding and pushing all over the track in an attempt to maintain the top spot. A yellow with three to go should have made for an exciting finish, but contact down the backstretch under caution ended Ward’s night. A continuous string of contact and cautions plagued the race and several drivers were forced pitside, until finally the remaining three laps were completed. Wildung gave Stearns all he had, but Stearns managed to prevail with the win. Wildung grabbed second, tailed by Dustin Beebe, Brian Haben, and Phil Braun. In the Wissota Late Models one and only night at the track this season, Marshall Fegers captured the victory after leading flag to flag. Two early yellows slowed the start, but Fegers maintained the lead as Nick Beyenhof and Kent Arment battled for second. Beyenhof prevailed in second while Jeff Wildung ducked low on Arment to move into third. Beyenhof and Wildung both worked to reel in Fegers and as they all met lap cars, the battle became much closer. Wildung slipped into second for several laps, but Beyenhof managed to sneak back by on the white flag lap. Neither Beyenhof nor Wildung could complete a pass on Fegers, who was checked out and on a mission for victory lane. Fegers crossed the checkers first, followed by Beyenhof, Wildung, Rick Schroeder, and Arment. Jon Tollakson scored yet another Madison Pure Stock feature win after starting in the rear of the field. Henry Hacker, Abby Hacker, TJ Cooper, and Sawyer Nelson rounded out the top five. The final night of racing in the 2013 season at Madison Speedway takes place next Saturday, August 31st at 7 p.m. for the 2nd Annual Tom Bly Memorial Race and Season Championship night. The five regular classes will be running and kids once again get in free! Check out madisonspeedwaymn or facebook/madisonspeedway.
