Mathnasium of Elmhurst challenges all of you to change your paradigm about what it means to be a Mathnasium Instructor. What makes a Mathnasium Instructor different than any other tutor? At Mathnasium, we are not just a tutor. We are CONFIDENCE builders! says owner Max Sennett. He explains: Basically, the 3:1 ratio is designed to increase confidence. When you are constantly hovering over the student (as a parent, a tutor, or teacher), you are unknowingly creating learned helplessness. What happens then is the student can do her work with your help, but when she is taking a quiz or test at school, you are not there to provide the guidance that she has learned to receive. Her confidence is lower when you are not nearby. What we want to do is to increase a students confidence to do well independently. This is what makes a Mathnasium Instructor different than a tutor. A Mathnasium Instructor is not just The Average Math Tutor. We are brilliant, engaging, and inspiring Math Experts that work one on one with students long enough to get them started and make sure they understand what to do. The Next Step is Very Important! The Mathnasium Instructor steps back at that point and lets the student work independently to give them the time to process this new information. Our Instructors then circle back to make sure they are doing the problems correctly, we make them explain how they solved the problem, and then give them the encouragement and praise to reward them for their efforts! If they need help we simply teach the lesson again (without judgment or ridicule) until they Get it. This helps the student to become a Confident, Independent Learner. This is what parents are trusting us to do for their children. Parents trust us to improve their childrens confidence. Mathnasiums Teach and Move On Teaching Method - Is the ability to help one student get engaged with their work and then move on to another student, allowing the first student the time and space to think and work independently, while still under the Instructors very watchful eye. This helps many students break the cycle of learned helplessness, where students have, over time, become psychologically dependent on thinking that they need help with every problem, new or old.
