Matthew 14:30-31; But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him.” There is a great song out which speaks of Peter being called by Jesus to walk on the water, if you would like to listen to it in the context of where were going today, click on the YouTube link below. Peter responds, and was actually doing it, but then realised the impossibility of the situation, and, at that point, temporarily lost faith, and started to sink, having to call on Jesus to rescue him. How often are we called to step into the unknown, and the only thing we have to hold onto, is faith, and, our trust in Jesus? Jesus is not one of those people who, when you cry “save me”, responds saying, or, more often thinking; “You’ve got yourself in this situation, now get yourself out of it … swim”! There are a couple of key points within this text today that I suspect we often miss when in a similar situation in our lives today here in the 21st century. Firstly, when you’re ‘sinking’, the call seems clear that you have to admit your need to God, that, when you start to sink, that is exactly the time to cry out; “Lord, save me” right from the core of your being! What do you find happening here? “Immediately” happens. No sooner had the words left Peter’s mouth, Jesus immediately stretches out his hand and catches him”! The psalmist writes in Psalm 50:15; (God speaking) “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” Likewise; “The Lord is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth” (Psalm 145:18). Matthew seems to want us to understand something clearly here. Think about it with me. Whilst Peter’s mind was focused on Jesus, he was empowered to walk on the water, but the second he took his focus off him and turned it on the storm, his fear short-circuited his ability to receive God’s sustaining power. Hope got Peter out of the boat. Trust held him up. Fear sank him. So I guess there are a few questions you might need to ask yourself as you meditate on this text and journal the responses the Holy Spirit lays on your heart. Perhaps here’s one to start the proverbial ‘ball-rolling’; “Is there anything you are pridefully holding onto, anything that is preventing you from admitting a true need to the Lord? My prayer is that, if you recognise that there is such a block in your life, that you would let go of it today.
