Mental Illness Awareness Week - Guidance Center Success - TopicsExpress

Mental Illness Awareness Week - Guidance Center Success Story: Frozen with fear, a 15-year-old client from our School Based Program had witnessed a gang murder near her home. She was severely traumatized, and it immediately impacted her ability to function at school in a very negative way. She even refused to leave her home out of fear and developed serious PTSD (Posttraumatic stress disorder). Her school contacted The Guidance Center and she started seeing a therapist right away. Since she was too afraid to leave her home, the therapist came to her a few times a week. Gradually, the number of times she saw her therapist decreased and the young girl was on her way to making a great deal of progress. She made so much progress that she is now fully recovered, a year after the incident. She is able to attend school and go out into the community without fear and can live her life as a happy 16-year-old girl. None of these improvements could have been made without her school contacting The Guidance Center, her hardworking and dedicated therapist, and the client, herself, who wanted to overcome her own fears.
