Mercy - When God withholds what we deserve. Grace - When God gives us what we dont deserve. In Thailand the predominant religion is Theravada Buddhism, a non-theistic religion that would interpret what happens here as the natural outworking of Karma (what goes around comes around is a very loose understanding of that concept), and that is certainly one way to look at it. I submit that the Christian concepts of mercy and grace are at play here, for the child doesnt get what he deserves for stealing, and the daughter gets much more than what she deserves years later. In all my reading of scripture, the scales of mercy and grace are skewed in favor of love, which is why the Prodigal Son story still troubles so many people to this day who are so consumed by a desire for justice (usually more akin to revenge) that they cannot understand the economy of Gods grace. His grace is about restoring relationships, about healing the soul.
