Midnite Muse Many people sit alone at home all day. My heart is breaking for... Elderly widows and widowers. Wishing for a visit. A phone call. A letter or card (no one has told them that people rarely use paper and pen anymore). Western culture, you are shamed by your treatment of the elderly. You think out of sight and out of mind solves the problem, dont you. Or, for some reason you think they are someone elses problem. Good grief, they are not a problem at all! They are your parents and grandparents and great grandparents. They are YOU someday. If you live by the golden rule, wont you expect to get the same treatment in your old age that you are giving them now? I have a recurring daydream that we are all given some small chore to do...and that the entire rest of our lives will be determined by how we responded to the opportunity of that one little act. I know that Im repeating myself, but let this soak: If your happiness in your own elder years is going to be determinined by how you treat your elders now, just how happy will you be? Stop making excuses. Be there for them.
