Midwinter Solstice is on June 21st, @ 3.05 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time. This is the shortest day and the longest night of the year south of the equator, the time when we give thanks and presents, feast with friends and family, and gather round the fire to tell the old stories, to reflect on the blessings of home, and warmth, and family, in a time when the world is cold and dark. Good foods for this festival include mulled wine and hearty meat casseroles, served with sesame potatoes as this time of the year is good to encourage abundance-consciousness and sesame seeds are symbols of abundance. To make sesame potatoes take more potatoes than you think you and your guests could possibly eat, peel, slice about 1 cm thick, layer at an angle in a baking dish. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with sesame seeds to coat the potato tops. Season and cook in a hot oven for about 45 minutes until you have soft, delicious potatoes with crispy edges.
