Monday, January 19 Dream a Dream Our daily lives often leave us apathetic, even hopeless about our future making it hard to imagine anything different. Yet Jesus brings good news about the future. This week we look hard at our dreams and the role they play in co-creating a bright future with God. PRAY Jesus, help me see something brighter and better in my day-to-day life. READ Read the text of Martin Luther King Jr.s I Have a Dream speech. Remind yourself that its based upon these images of a bright future in the Bible. In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Isaiah 40:3-5 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! Amos 5:24 REFLECT Martin Luther King Jr. was a dreamer. He had a specific dream for the future that was bright and based on the heart of God. Using the words of the Bible, he not only painted a picture, but outlined how to get there---through spiritual strength not physical force. He continues to inspire all of us to dream audacious, bright, even unpopular dreams for the future. Our dreams are important. Most of the time, God chooses to work through people to bring healing, justice and love to our world. Yet dreams are usually covered in fear. Fear is always a tactic of the enemy to keep us from our God-given dreams. Like the struggle for racial justice, you have a dream buried in you, covered in fear. Take a step toward your dream and let God overcome that fear. RESPOND Think about all of the things youve dreamed about-whether you dreamt it ten years ago or this morning. Then, answer one or both of these questions (Martin Luther Kings speech answers both): What is the broken part of our world that bothers you in the depths of your heart? What is the part of Gods heart that you yearn for the most? PRAY God, awaken the dream youve put in my heart. Start showing me a picture of it again.
