Most of the time I hear others mentioning Taoism they do so in - TopicsExpress

Most of the time I hear others mentioning Taoism they do so in relation to Confucianism; typically too, they do it for the purpose of explaining eastern religion as using different religions as heads of different aspects of their lives. I always get a bit of a twinge when I hear them discussing these two as complimentary and symbiotic teachings. At least for my own understanding, I have always felt that the two were far more contradictory and antagonistically polar. Sure, each has teachings that more explicitly cover one aspect of life more than the other - but this has never given me the impression that Taoism and Confucianism shared their own specialties that the other really had no place providing council in. In fact, when I find myself explaining what I understand of Taoism I find it easier to first explain some of the fundamental beliefs/directions of Confucianism and then to say basically Taoism is the complete opposite of that and then elaborate on how that relates to our perception/understanding/interaction with things. I am curious to hear what other members here have experienced in this regard. Do you find that most others vaguely familiar with Taoism consider it to be a dual-factor with Confucianism? Or perhaps too, do you believe they are more complimentary than I seem to appreciate? :-)
