Movie Review time! Ive been watching some films recently, and here are some of my thought on them, in no particular order: “Bernie” 2011, starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, Matthew McConaughey. PG-13. This is an odd, jarring film. It’s under the “comedy” category, which is strange too. It’s a true story. Bernie is the town undertaker, and everyone in Carthage, TX loves him. He sings in the church choir, he’s a big loveable fluffball. It starts out with him showing some students how to embalm a body…(note to self: be cremated, I don’t want some dude like this one Super-gluing my eyes and mouth shut). When the town’s richest woman (MacLaine) becomes a widow, Bernie befriends her, and then moves in to her house. All seems well, until she becomes an overbearing control freak, and Bernie has been relegated to making coffee and clipping her toenails. Quickly this film goes from funny, to really not-funny. Finally Bernie has had enough and picks up a .22 in the garage and pops her in the back, then stuffs her into the freezer in the garage. Remember, this is a true story, and a comedy. He’s arrested, tried, and convicted for her murder, and off to the slammer he goes, end of story. Throughout this film, there are lots of short interviews with various townsfolk who give their version of events, and actually that really adds a lot of texture to this black comedy. If you like Jack Black, he does a convincing job in the very dark film. “Contagion” 2011, starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Lawrence Fishburne. I thought this film was a fail. The tagline says “Nothing Spreads Like Fear”, only there’s not a lot of fearing going on. The entire world is in the process of being offed by a virus that no one understands, and there is no cure for. After you contract it, you’ve got about 48 hours till you bleed out. You would think MASS PANIC! LOOTING! CHAOS! But alas, there’s only one or two short scenes of some people casually overturning cars…yawn. If you’re the type of person who likes the good guys to win, and the story to be wrapped up in a neat little bow, you’ll be disappointed. A little bit of the story gets resolved, but not nearly enough. Oh, and if you’re germ phobic, don’t like shaking hands and use Purell a lot, don’t watch this.
