Mrs Fraser and I often receive some grief from family and friends who dont understand the softball thing. They tell us that its just too much and to let the kids be kids and have fun. Well they do have fun. But not always I admit. It takes a lot of work. Practice 3 days a week 11 months of the year. But giving the girls the opportunity to become leaders is worth it. Sure I would love to spend my weekends watching college football or participating in some other activity. That would be great. My time with them is fleeting and I understand that. Soon they will be on their own and this time will just be memories in a scrap book. I can tell you that softball has empowered them. It has given them confidence they would otherwise never achieve. Kambry has been selected twice to student council not by her own ambition but by her teachers recognition. Hailey has followed in her sisters footsteps and is participating also. We have received many comments from teachers who have told us that both girls are different now then they were before. I believe its confidence. I cant describe adequately the moment when you know as a parent you have made the right decision. Its there in front of you and you can recognize it but you fail to comprehend just how powerful your decisions can impact your child. Today I experienced one such moment. It was just like any other softball game. Kambry had a line drive hit to her at first base just high enough and outside to make it a challenging play and she caught the ball. I have never seen her so proud. This is a kid who hardly ever shows emotion happy or sad. After the game a grandfather of one of the other girls came over to congratulate Kambry on the great play she had. She was modest but you could tell it meant the world to her. She would never have experienced that moment sitting at home. She felt important if just for the moment. Thats what involvement does. I know it sounds cliché. But I can tell you it changes them. Kids become more responsible, independent and outgoing. Do your kids a favor and get them involved in something. Sports, cheerleading, 4-H, anything. It will enrich their lives and yours.
