Mull it over Monday. Sleep on this! ‘Behold the Aseity.’ This one is for those who are philosophically minded. If I don’t explain this well enough for you don’t hesitate to ask and if you are willing then ask publically in the comments. If you haven’t understood it someone else might not of as well and by reading your question it may help build them up in their faith. Today we explore the awesomeness of the great ‘I Am’ in the mechanics of His self-sufficientness, His self-relative nature and the importance of the concept of the multiple singular God. (Yes, this will get heavily into the Trinity and junk, although I will pretty much ignore the person of the Holy Spirit, firstly because I don’t have a firm enough grasp on it to talk about Him in a way that is relative to this point; secondly, even if I could that would overcomplicate an already complex topic and make near impossible to make the point I want within 5000 words :P) Enjoy! Firstly we have to get the supremacy of Christ down. Colossians 1 15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. Here we are speaking of Christ Jesus and when it refers to ‘Firstborn’ it is not speaking of when Christ began but is rather a title referring to his inheritance, brining all things of heaven and earth under Christ and we have been called to be joint heirs with Him through the Holy Spirit. (Heb 1, Ephesians 1, John 1) In Jewish culture the firstborn son would receive the majority inheritance , so this position is given as a title to Christ to show display His right to have authority when times has reached their fulfilment. Are you still with me? We goooood? Make sure you have a good idea what this meaning before moving on. Jesus is God and is a part of God and is the Son of the Father in terms of the relationship within the God head/the Trinity. (the following is a revised exert of a sermon I have done.) Before the creation of the world, before time was relative, there is God; and God is Trinity. This is what an Aseity is, a deity that is relative to itself and therefore can determine its own self existence and maintain its definition without anything else existing (just imagine for a second that you are in complete void, there is nothing physical around you, therefore there is no way to determine who or what or even if you are because there is nothing else for you to be relative to. If there was a circle and you a shape, you would be outside the circle or inside the circle, your existence is determined by the circle, without that circle you would not technically exist). The Trinity is relative to themselves. The Father loved the Son and the Son loved the Father. Love exists within the Trinity. This is why God is love. They were in eternity; and God held forever in His Word; into that time, as an expression that love for each other, God said. “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness… So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Gen 1v26-27) The image of God is not the individual. It is the relationship of love, the nature of a family. This is why the greatest commandment is. (Matt 22v37-39) ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ That is the image we were created in. And it is what we are created by and for. (note that this does not exclude the humanness of God’s character or His emotions etc, Christ did not become flesh to relate to us, but we were created so that we could relate to Him.) But this image we bear is not the reason creation exists, it is not the ultimate answer to everything. This is the heart of God; everything; everything exists as the expression of the love within God. All of time and creation exists so that the Eternal Son, could express His love to the Eternal Father. Through the obedience to death; even death on a cross. It is in this expression of obedience that the Son displays that he is worthy to call out, ‘Abba, Father;’ it is for this moment we exist. The moment when Jesus was alone in the garden of Gethsemane; and he prayed to the Father ‘not my will, but your will be done.’ The perfect expression of love was fulfilled. But this is not all, for the love of God is dynamic. The Father returns His love to the Son, for He is worthy to receive it and to be clothed in the glory of God and the purpose for all of creation come to completion when time have reached their fulfilment and the expression of the love with God is came to its epic conclusion for all to bear witness. But where am ‘I’ in all this? Where does the ‘me’ come into this picture of a relationship? You know, God did not need to bring us into this relationship at all. We are sinners; we rebelled against God and set ourselves up in opposition to the One who is the Light of Life. Eternal death belonged to us by right because we have rejected the one who is life. It is only by God’s grace that we have any part in his love, in this relationship. Eternal yours in Christ - Chef.
