Mum question:The thought of the epidural petrifies me! Iv had one baby 15 months ago and didnt want it then but had to for the safety of our baby. My epidural site still aches sometimes, especially whenever I think about it and the thought of it makes me sick to my stomach. I am currently 23 weeks pregnant and my partner is really pushing for me to get the epi as soon as I go into labour this time. I will do anything to avoid it though! Im so upset! I need advice in a few things: 1. Is it normal for the epi site to still be sore 15 months later or is it all in my head? 2. How can I mentally prepare myself for possibly needing the epi? 3. What were your best natural pain reliefs? Any other suggestions either? Thankyou Pinky says: It may be helpful to do a debrief of your last birth with a counsellor who specialises in birthing/post birth emotions. Also try to find a good natural birthing class and hire a doula or , if you cant financially afford this, engage a student doula or midwife (they have to follow a number of births under supervision) to support you through your remaining pregnancy and this birth. It sounds as though it would be good to have a counselling session with your partner too so he can support you through the birth that you want. Its important that you arent undermined by anyone at any stage of labour and that you feel safe and protected. The good news is that second births are usually much easier - this time, your body knows what to do. Check out Rhea Dempseys book Birthing With Confidence and her website birthingwisdom.au
