Music is one of the finest ways mankind has invented to celebrate both the glory of life and the depths of tragedy we sometimes must face. This past week I have experienced the two in ways that touched me profoundly. On Saturday Rosalind and I heard the Chicago Symphony play the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor and Mahlers Fifth Symphony, two of the high points in bringing this abstract art form to speak to us about the value of our lives. And then, on Tuesday, I attended one of eight lectures being given at an OLLI course on the First World War, where the instructor showed a YouTube film of And the Band played Waltzing Matilda.
