My 2 cents: I teach poor kids everyday, of all races, and these kids all want a better life. What they lack are assets, not only financial but social, emotional and other skills that contribute to ones success or demise. How many of you would join a game of monopoly with all pieces taken except 1 railroad? That is what life is like for a person born with no assets, but we often take for granted or overlook the things that were provided to us. Some kids, white and black dont have conflict resolution skills and that is the difference between walking away and reporting an incident versus fighting and being expelled and having a criminal record. That doesnt mean the student is not smart, it demonstrates exposure or should I say a lack of; not to mention having assets to have that record expunged. Being able to articulate, communicate effectively and express ideas are assets that some people lack and others posses. A lack of money did not contribute to all problems therefore more money is not the answer to those same problems. Just because your kids may have been exposed to some things that my kids have not doesnt make them any better nor does it guarantee success!!!
