My Facebook feed has been blowing up non stop with people condemning the racing industry, saying horse racing should be banned after two horses died after yesterdays Melbourne cup race. Claiming that its animal abuse etc etc. Well as someone who has spent a LOT of time at racing stables, with race horses and at race tracks with the animals before and after their races I am going to tell you all that you are very wrong. Race horses are incredibly well taken care of. Their meals are perfectly balanced nutrionally, they get more exercise and care than ANY human being I have ever met. They are tended frequently by vets, farriers and grooms who take care of them constantly. The death of the first horse was due to acute cardiac failure, something nobody could have foreseen and was not the result of any form of abuse. The death of the second horse was the result of someone who ignored the warnings/advice they were given regarding their child waving a flag in close proximity to the horse, something which would have startled the animal regardless of setting. The owners decided to humanly have the horse put down because of the severity of the injury, an action that the owner of any animal would do if their animal was severely injured. Athletes die playing football, racing cars, cycling, boxing and playing other sports and yet I have never seen people saying any of those sports should be banned. Now before people shout that horses are animals and they cant speak for themselves I can say from first hand experience that horses love to run, and they love to run fast. Racing is a highly and strictly regulated sports with more rules in place than the average person knows.
