My Letter to the Editor of Portage County Gazette (Friday edition) RE: Money Out, Voters In (Move to Amend). This issue is a meta-issue in so far as it seems to impact a range of other issues, the Ferrous Mining Bill, the Local-Control-is-History-Bill, the Destruction of Public Education Bill, The Privatization of Well Water By Agri-Biz Bill, and just a host of other issues and their enabling wrecking legislation all wrought by Too Much Money... -------------- For many of us in Wisconsin, it’s time to overturn the Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United case. This year, 2014, could be the year when a big proportion of our electorate decide they are fed up with our corrupt Congress, where money talks and the politicians spend all their time raising money from a tiny slice of billionaires and mega-millionaires. The nationwide Move To Amend coalition is working to restore our Constitution to what our Founding Fathers intended and bring real democracy back to America. The number of people who are going to meetings and volunteering to get the movement to amend the U.S. constitution in front of the U.S. Congress is steadily growing. This is a huge non-partisan effort and we really need your help! A surprising number of small cities and villages in Wisconsin already have referendums on their ballot calling for the Constitutional amendment to get money out and voters back into the political process. This has been done with volunteer effort. This proposed amendment overturning the rule of dark money in our politics includes two parts 1. [Artificial Entities Such as Corporations Do Not Have Constitutional Rights] The rights protected by the Constitution of the United States are the rights of natural persons only (cont.) 2. [Money is Not Free Speech] Federal, State, and local government shall regulate, limit, or prohibit contributions and expenditures, (cont.) Interested citizens can read the full text of the proposed amendment here: https://movetoamend.org/wethepeopleamendment Please join us for our second Portage County meeting, Tuesday, January 21, 6:30-8:00 pm, at the Charles M. White Library in Stevens Point. We will discuss how to get Portage County municipalities on the record supporting this move to amend the constitution. Members of all political parties in the area are welcome to attend–Republican, Democrat, Green, Libertarian, independent, or no party.. Students and student organization leaders are especially urged to attend.
