My condolences to all Colombia on the death of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Anyone living under a dictatorship was touched by his book, 100 Years of Solitude. Political leanings aside, Marquezs art distilled what freedom is about: Not to have to paint your house blue because a magistrate says so! That symbolism in 100 Years, the absurd, arbitrary, & cruel way power manifests in a dictatorship, explained it better than a poli-sci book. The institution of state power translating into psychological state terror by use of symbols like paint or colored ribbons lose some of their power when explained and satirized by a great artist like Garcia Marquez.
