My cousin Gladys (a stewardess for United Airlines back in the late 1950s) was fortunate enough to work their flights between Los Angeles and Honolulu. And she always said there seemed to be just two options where treating customers was concerned. If the airline found their planes flying with empty seats, there was nothing they wouldnt do for passengers: hot towels, slippers, gourmet meals, champagne. But if business was already good enough, there suddenly WERE no more towels, slippers or fancy grub. Today, first class travel between New York and London can cost you as much as a compact car... EACH WAY! And for this not insubstantial investment, you get a little extra legroom, two windows instead of one, a decent meal and a wide array of electronic distractions. So, if and when I ever cross The Pond, you can be sure youll find me in steerage with the other cattle. But we will, at least, take comfort in the knowledge that all of us (rich and poor) are going to arrive at the same time.
