My father had just turned 18 when World War I came to a close; by - TopicsExpress

My father had just turned 18 when World War I came to a close; by World War II he was in his mid 40s and was not called to serve. The only person that I knew personally who served in World War II was married to my first cousin. He went in with the 3rd wave on D-Day and was fighting in Europe right up until the Germans surrendered. He survived. I really cant say that I know anyone close who fought in Korea, but I know several folks who served in Viet Nam, I know some that were awarded the Purple Heart. Several of my former students have seen action in Iraq and Afghanistan, but none lost their lives. I guess that I am fortunate to be able to say with all honesty that I do not know personally any soldier who has given his or her life in wartime. I am not about to start a debate as to the necessity or the foolishness of any war, I just want to honor and remember those folks who have died horrible deaths so that folks like my friends and me can enjoy life in a nation where we are guaranteed the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. PEACE
