My first full time job after graduating from Bartlett High School was putting soles on shoes in this factory. I remember the smell of leather and glue. I remember the machine. A press that youd attach the shoe top to, place the sole perfectly underneath, hit the button, and woosh, it would press down on to the hot glued sole. Bang move em to the conveyer belt and grab the next pair. Buzz around 10:30 was the coffee and cigarette break. The guys gathered in a small room with old wooden benches. The names of past workers carved all over them. I was the youngest - 17. I remember a well dressed man with red hair and a neatly trimmed moustache. Hed spent years in the military and had seen all kinds of exotic places. His style and sophistication impressed me. I joined the service right after my 18th. birthday.
