My friend Maia is starting a group for kids 8-12 years old at Starr Ranch (Audabon society) in Dove Canyon/ Rancho Santa Margarita. The group will meet 4-6 times a year on a Friday from 9-12. The cost is $10/per person. The parents can choose to participate or not, but each person will be $10.00. This is a nominal cost for all that is involved. Over the past 4 years research projects have included assessing and evaluating native and nonnative trees, catching, evaluating, and releasing insects, small rodents, and amphibians, tracking birds by their calls, freezing and microscopically looking at insects, assessing animal tracks and their scat, riding in the back of a large open truck, taking hikes, and always, always using the scientific method. These groups are taught by two biologists. They bring the kids closer to nature and allow them to understand the world of biology up close. The kids always seem to have fun and learn a tremendous amount in the process.
