My heart breaks for Robin Williams and his family. It is time to - TopicsExpress

My heart breaks for Robin Williams and his family. It is time to break the stigma of mental illness. I suffer from depression and have been successfully treated for it. But, sometimes, the black dog (as Winston Churchill called his depression) takes over and it can be very hard to come back from the abyss. Its no different than a diabetic needing insulin but there is still that shame. You wouldnt tell a diabetic to snap out of it or go for a walk and youll be fine. Its a chemical imbalance of the brain; no different than any other organ. Its such a silent disease; you dont appear to be ill and there are not causes for it (that I know of) - no huge runs/walks/bracelets/tshirts/balloons. When you are diagnosed, you look normal, so there are very few dinners sent over, offers to help, support system. (I will say I am SO blessed with my best friend, Susan Perrigo, who has pulled me out of the hole many times XOXO.) Time to change things; talk about the tears of a clown. Such a loss and such a needless waste. Suicide is a very real side effect of depression. Time to get this out in the open.
