My kids and I watched this today. MLK said, Its much easier to integrate a lunch counter than to guarantee a decent livable wage and he pointed to the horrific conditions facing blacks--and these horrific conditions persist until this day. He also said that riots are socially destructive and self-defeating, and that violence will only create more social problems than they will solve. So he would continue to condemn violence but at the same time, he must continue to condemn conditions that make persons feel it necessary to engage in riots. I dont think anyone could say it better. I also feel like theres still An Other America, one full of despair and heartrending misery. And as fellow Americans, we can and we should try to lend a hand. May a great soul be celebrated today, and his words both honored and remembered.
