My picture with Mayor Caldwell prompted a conversation with a friend about my job with the C&C Rail Transit Project, a large part of it dedicated to informing property owners that their location was within the projects Right of Way and we were going to pursue purchasing their homes and businesses. An INCREDIBLY difficult job at times - especially in those early days, when initial reactions ranged from hostile to heartbreaking. One woman in particular grew on me. The first time we talked she called me a Communist, among many other things. But we continued to talk almost every day for over two years. By the time I left I was the only person on the project shed speak to. After joking with my friend that I talked to her so often I still remember her number, I decided to give her a call. She still had much to vent about, but above all expressed her appreciation..and then asked if Id call her next time I was in town so she could take me to lunch. And my spirit for public service is renewed! Hang in there my fellow govt workers....you ARE appreciated, regardless of the names youre called! ;)
