My thoughts on Crimea: Russia has a history, even recently, of - TopicsExpress

My thoughts on Crimea: Russia has a history, even recently, of trying to make land grabs to gain back some of their old territory. This is obviously a shitty thing for them to do. Their incursion in Georgia was a little more clear, though. Georgia obviously didnt want them and asked for our help. The situation in Ukraine isnt as clear. Ukraine is in their current turmoil because the country is somewhat divided in how they want to ally themselves. The orange revolution and this current overthrow were both about breaking away from Russia and becoming closer tied with Europe. But, there are people who prefer the Russian way. As Russia would have us believe, most of them are in Crimea. Here in America, unless you have relatives from that area or are from there recently yourself, we can not know what the people in that area want. Sitting here in here in America, we are in a poor place to judge. And I feel thats true of our leaders too. There were tense situations between the Ukrainian military and the Russian force, but that nothing happened until last night is impressive. Those soldiers were supposed to protect their land, and they didnt. They were clearly for a unified Russia and likely not from crimea, because thats how military works, so we cant presume their attitudes were indicative of the people that are there. There is a whole lot of stuff we dont know. We do know that Crimea didnt ask for help and that the people there are culturally closer to Russia then the rest of Ukraine and that theres a Russian naval base. I think the right thing to do is to make sure Russia pays Ukraine for the territory they took, and helps people relocate from Crimea into Ukraine, who dont want to be part of Russia. Screw all this sanction bs posturing. Help the people who want help but otherwise dont interfere where we have no business being. That little area isnt worth an American life, or the billion dollar drone we lost to Russia over it. Not when we dont have any clear cut idea as to what the people want. Again, we KNOW the people of Ukraine ARE divided over what direction they want to go. That seems to be all we know. I dont like what Russia did, but I dont see that there is a clear answer, so we should stay out of it.
