My two cents: Though I agree with universal suffrage and to all - TopicsExpress

My two cents: Though I agree with universal suffrage and to all that claim this a peaceful protest, Ive already seen a handful of videos where police had been encountered by smug youngsters. I am not okay with that. I feel bad for those whos business lives and daily activities have become more complicated - especially the elderly. Hong Kong is small, expensive, we live and die with out transport system - the best in the world. To be honest, I have never been a voter but I recognize when I have been shown love and I show it back. Hong Kong embraced my family and I from California when I was 3 years old. Although I went to an American school, HK culture is a part of me. The funny thing is that I started learning mandarin when I was 2, and because of that, all my amazing teachers and living in Shanghai for 2 years recently, I also identify strongly with China. Maybe not everything it is today but definitely what it once was and definitely what it can be again. All that aside, my reason for posting this poorly constructed note is that, although I love Hong Kong and China equally, I dont feel comfortable siding with either side of the movement. I understand that our basic laws on HK have been violated but I also understand how difficult it must be for the mainland to try and merge two cultures - just look at my confused-ass life story. More than that, though, I have never felt as safe as I do when I am back home in Hong Kong. I cant speak for everyone but its clear today how much I take for granted that this amazing city gives me on a daily basis. I trust in Hong Kong because it has allowed me a global eduction, allowed my family to start a great business, allowed me permanent residency, and has kept my family and I safe all these years. My parents being away from India and the US for so long - its almost as if Hong Kong is one of my grandparents or guardian angels, watching over us as we endeavored in a foreign land. Maybe its because Im indian and big on respecting your parents but I feel almost that I would be disobeying my grandfather if I joined the protest. Weird? Yeah I dont know. Im all for speaking my mind with my family but I believe there is a way to do that respectfully and in a way that doesnt disrupt the lives of those around us. Thats all. Peace and love.
